Cost planning

Solar panel cost in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia

A useful cost estimate starts with an actual roof and a defined project scope. Renovessa separates the array, roof complexity, electrical work, battery, financing and verified incentives instead of hiding them inside one headline number.

Why a single DMV price is not a quote

Two homes using the same number of panels can produce different installer scopes. Roof pitch, the number of roof planes, setbacks, access, equipment choice, electrical-service condition, permitting and interconnection work all affect labor and materials.

Renovessa shows an installed-cost range only when the active pricing version has a source, sample context, review date and publication approval. If that evidence is unavailable, the calculator withholds the dollar result and still gives you roof, system-size and production planning value.

  • Base photovoltaic array and inverter
  • Roof- and electrical-work allowances
  • Battery as a separate scenario
  • Financing cost separated from cash price
  • Potential incentives shown separately and never guaranteed

Compare proposals on a common scope

Cash price, financed amount and total payments are different measurements. Price per watt can help compare similarly scoped solar-only bids, but it becomes misleading when one proposal includes a battery, roof work or a main-panel upgrade and another does not.

A complete comparison also names the panel and inverter models, expected first-year production, workmanship and equipment warranties, exclusions, schedule and the assumptions behind any savings claim.

Federal and local programs are not blanket discounts

The federal homeowner credit formerly associated with IRC §25D is not automatically modeled for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Maryland, Virginia and the District also have different program structures, utility rules and application processes.

A program can be relevant without being available or applicable to a particular homeowner. Renovessa therefore labels it as a candidate until jurisdiction, utility, date and eligibility evidence support inclusion.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in Renovessa's solar cost estimate?
Only line items supported by the active, reviewed pricing version are displayed. The result identifies included allowances and exclusions, while batteries and financing remain separate scenarios.
Why might two installer prices differ?
Equipment, roof access, electrical scope, warranties, production assumptions, financing fees, exclusions and installer workload can all differ. Compare the full scope rather than the headline total alone.
Does the calculator guarantee the installed price?
No. It is a planning estimate. A contractor must inspect the property, confirm code and utility requirements, and issue the binding proposal.

Sources, review and limitations

Renovessa uses primary government, regulator, utility and model-provider sources. Links below are the evidence pack for this guide; account rules, funding and eligibility still require confirmation at decision time.

Substantive change
Reframed post-2025 federal-credit treatment and strengthened fail-closed pricing guidance.
Update policy
