A solar battery does not automatically keep a Northern Virginia home powered during an outage. Backup depends on the battery's usable capacity and output, the loads placed on the backup panel, the inverter and transfer equipment, the solar system's operating mode, weather, and the installation's permits and utility requirements. A useful plan starts with the circuits you need, not a battery-size headline.

What backup can and cannot mean

Some systems back up selected circuits such as a refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, sump pump, or gas-furnace controls. Whole-home backup may require larger equipment, load management, multiple batteries, electrical-service changes, or a generator strategy. Grid-tied solar alone usually shuts down during an outage for safety; battery systems need approved islanding and transfer equipment to supply a protected load panel.

Start with an outage-load list

Create three groups:

  • Must-run: refrigerator, medical equipment, internet, security, sump pump, and basic lights
  • Useful: selected outlets, a gas furnace blower, television, garage door, or microwave
  • High-demand: electric resistance heat, central air conditioning, electric water heating, range, dryer, EV charger, and well pump

Record each appliance's voltage, running watts if known, startup surge, duty cycle, and the hours it must operate. A contractor should confirm nameplate data and measure or model actual loads. Do not assume that a battery that can store a certain amount of energy can start every motor or run high-demand heating equipment.

Capacity and power are different

Battery capacity describes how much energy can be stored and delivered over time. Inverter power describes how much load can be served at once. A system can have enough stored energy for a long outage but still trip when a pump or compressor starts. Ask for usable capacity, continuous power, surge power, reserve setting, round-trip assumptions, and expected runtime for the named loads.

Solar does not guarantee winter recharge

A battery can recharge from solar only when the system is producing and the controls allow it. Cloud cover, snow, shading, panel orientation, outage duration, and household use affect the next day's reserve. Ask how the system prioritizes essential loads, battery reserve, solar charging, and export when the grid is available.

Northern Virginia utility and permit questions

Dominion Energy Virginia and NOVEC publish separate interconnection information. Utility approval is not the same as local building or electrical approval; the homeowner remains responsible for local codes and restrictions. Ask the contractor to identify the utility, permit, inspection, disconnect, and monitoring steps for the address. Condo or HOA rules may add equipment-location, fire-access, or exterior-appearance review.

If the essential load is a sump pump, medical device, or high-starting-current motor, compare battery, generator, and hybrid options around the actual risk. If the goal is lower bills rather than outage resilience, compare time-of-use or export economics separately from backup. The best solution is the one that matches the homeowner's priority and operating constraints.
