One of the most common questions homeowners ask before going solar: "Should I replace my roof first?" This guide helps you assess your roof's readiness and understand the implications.
Roof age rule of thumb
If your roof has less than 10 years of remaining life, you should strongly consider replacing it before installing solar. Removing and reinstalling solar panels to replace a roof later costs $3,000–$6,000+ and may void panel warranties.
Asphalt shingles: 20–30 year lifespan. If your shingles are 15+ years old, have a roofer assess remaining life before solar installation.
Metal roofs: 40–70 year lifespan. Generally do not need replacement before solar.
Slate or tile: 50–100 year lifespan. Usually fine for solar, but mounting requires specialized expertise.
